Game 1 Recap vs. WV Wildfire

The Washington Prodigy (1-0) wanted to make a statement to the rest of theUSWFL coming into last Saturday’s home opener against West Virginia (0-1) and boy did they ever, beating the Wildfire 67-0.

The Prodigy defense took the field first and they shut West Virginia down.  The Wildfire barely gained a yard from scrimmage and fumbled twice.  It took the Prodigy offense a bit longer to get rolling but after the defense gave the offense a short field to work with, Fullback Crystal Boyd ran into the end zone with 1:20 remaining the first quarter.

Things really started opening up in the second quarter. Fullback Sophia Reyes had a couple of back-to-back runs including punching in a touchdown from the 1 yard line against a big West Virginia front line. Now it was the defense’s turn to get in on the action. A high snap was recovered in the end zone by Defensive End Faith Rogers for a Prodigy touchdown, and on the next defensive series, Safety Keshia Cousar ran back an interception for six points. West Virginia fumbled their next possession giving Eby Okonkwo her second fumble recovery of the half.

The Prodigy went into the locker room up 47-0 at the half.

The second half was much like the first. The offense was aided by Boyd (three touchdowns), Mimi Gantt, Lania Charity.  On defense, Cornerback Ashely Botts brought back an interception for a touchdown and Cousar returned a punt for a touchdown.
